What are some rules?
· Author’s name mentioned in the sentence- only the page number is needed
o Example: According to Roger Jones, The misunderstanding between Romeo and Juliet proved to kill them (23).
· Sources with more than three authors or editors- only write the name of the first author in parenthesis and acknowledge the others by writing “et. al”
o Example: The lack of knowledge about his past caused Oedipus to overlook his own involvement in his father’s death (Green et. al 67).
· Unknown author- a shortened title of the work and page number is needed
o Example: The need to go against our upbringing is a fundamental human desire (“Rebel Syndrome” 45).
· Online sources without an author- write the title or shortened version of the title of the article may be used
o Example: Obesity will only claim more American victims in the future due to the popularity of unhealthy yet tasty food (“Obesity”).
· Online sources without a page number- the page number may be omitted, write the title of article (Note: write the page numbers for PDF files)
o Example: One of the famous lines of Washington reads, “As the ingenerate nature of Adam is made evident every time a celestial body turns on its axis, I sit in heartache and disdain” (“Most Memorable Lines of Poetry”).
